Description
Switchman Job Description: Switchmen are responsible for providing the safe and timely movement of freight via rail within an industrial park/rail terminal.

Essential Functions:
- Inspect equipment, locomotives, and rail cars to ensure they are safe to use or move in a train consist.
- Perform tasks such as coupling (connecting) equipment, aligning drawbars, applying and releasing hand brakes, riding rail cars, replacing couplers/knuckles and effectively communicating information to crews and supervisors via radio and/or hand signals.
- Maintain accurate written and electronic documentation and prepare necessary materials as required.
- Observe and comply with all company policies, railroad rules and regulations pertaining to safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
- Perform additional duties as assigned by a supervisor.
Required Qualifications:
- Applicants must have reached the age of 18 or above.
- Must possess valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
- Must be able to pass pre-employment background/ driving record screening
- Must be able to pass pre-employment medical screening and physical assessment.
Physical and Mental Demands:
- The capacity to engage in physically demanding tasks including: standing stationary for prolonged periods, walking over undulating terrain for the duration of a shift, bending, stooping, kneeling, pulling, climbing a railcar ladder, and maintaining balance while riding a railcar over varying distances.
- Normal color vision, enabling the detection and interpretation of various visual color signage and displays.
- Adequate depth perception to accurately assess the speed and distance of rail equipment in assigned work location.
- Manual dexterity to frequently perform coordinated hand movements - grasping, pulling, placing, moving.
- The strength capacity to push, pull, lift and carry objects up to 50lbs. in weight.
- The capability to audibly detect sounds of both a regular and irregular nature.
Work Environment/Conditions:
- This position’s essential job functions will be performed entirely outside. As such, the position will be exposed to all weather conditions - heat, cold, rain, snow, and ice.
- This position requires a variable work schedule, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes and airborne particles.
- Frequent exposure to loud machinery.
